Image result for mat bob booksTitle: Mat
Author: Bobby Lynn Maslen
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: May 2006
ISBN: 978-0-439-17545-6
Rating: 4 out of 5 friends
Summary: This book introduces beginning sounds m,a,t, and s. There was also some rhyming through the book, ex. Mat sat. The only part of this book that I did not think was appropriate for young children was that Mat sat on Sam and Sam sat on Mat, which may show children that it is okay to sit on their friends.

Author: Bobby Lynn Maslen
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: May 2006
ISBN: 978-0-439-17552-4
Rating: 4 out of 5 tugs
Summary: This book introduces the u and f sounds in words. There were some pages with sounds that may have tricked beginning readers and have confused them what sounds they were supposed to be saying. It was about a cat, Muff, and a dog, Ruff, who are tugging on a rug together.

Author: Bobby Lyn Maslen
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: May 2006
ISBN: 978-0-439-17555-5
Rating: 4 out of 5 cats
Summary: This book introduces the sounds of l, k, and x. There were focuses on the l and k sounds a lot more than there were for the x sounds that beginning readers would have noticed. It was about a boy named Lad who napped a lot and had a cat names Kit who sat in a box and had six kittens.

  1. Kristyna,

These seem like some great decodable books for beginning readers! You chose a wide variety of phonics elements and phonograms in your books. These books look like they are all part of a big collection a parent or teacher could buy and use with children to help them start reading and learning those phonics skills. Unfortunately, the story line of most of these books is okay at best. I wonder how authors of these books could make the story line better?

  2. I notice these illustrations, just from the cover alone, are very bland and not too inviting. I feel as though children may get bored of the book fairly quickly. Maybe some brighter colors would have helped?

  3. Jade is absolutely correct when she discusses the bland illustrations in Bob books. The Bob books are very cheaply produced in terms of quality, with just a staple or two holding together the thin pages. I wonder if they are trying to keep production costs low. I have a little box of 10 Bob books that cost $18.00 from Barnes and Noble, that is the same price as a really nice hardcover picture book.
